Verpakking als marketingtool: het verhaal achter de Kolibri Adventskalender

Packaging as a marketing tool: the story behind the Kolibri Advent Calendar

An advent calendar with living plants. It sounds simple, but from a packaging perspective it was anything but. Still, the concept made the press and became a sales success. This is the story behind OK Plant's very first Kolibri Advent Calendar, and what it proves about the power of well-thought-out packaging.

The concept

The advent calendar has been a proven format in cosmetics and lifestyle for years. OK Plant decided to translate that format into the world of plants and home living: 17 days counting down to Christmas, with a surprise every day in the form of a plant or home accessory. A first for the houseplant market.

The packaging challenge

Packaging living plants is a craft in itself. They need air, light and protection. Combine that with an advent calendar that also needs to be visually appealing, and you have a complex packaging challenge. We developed more than 17 packaging components: boxes, sleeves, die-cuts, perforations and print finishes, all combined into one beautiful gift set. The result: a calendar that turns unboxing into a moment, keeps the plants in top condition and protects them right up to the last day.

Packaging as a marketing tool

The concept made the press. This is a great example of how well-thought-out packaging is not only an investment, but also a marketing tool: it drives attention, creates an experience and opens up a new sales moment. Retailers and florists could pre-register for a limited edition, which created extra scarcity and urgency.

What this project proves

Packaging is not the last thing you sort out. It is part of your brand strategy. Whoever recognizes that early has an edge over the competition.
